Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for hours when numerous of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
